Officine Panerai 35th Americas Cup Official Partner
KUWAIT
MARCH 2017

OFFICINE PANERAI PRESENTS THE OFFICIAL WATCHES OF THE 35TH AMERICA’S CUP. A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN LEGENDS OF THE SEA, A PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN THE PAST AND FUTURE, BETWEEN TIMELESS PASSION AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY.

Officine Panerai is an Official Partner of the 35th America’s Cup, the most celebrated and prestigious sailing race in the world, first held off the south coast of England in 1851. The America’s Cup has borne witness to some of the most thrilling challenges in the history of sailing, including one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sport in the last edition, when ORACLE TEAM USA won eight consecutive races to win the Cup for the second time.

The 2017 America’s Cup, to be hosted in Bermuda, is sure to be an exceptional contest involving extreme athleticism, courage, passion and skills, as well as the most advanced technology in the sport. The new America’s Cup Class foiling catamarans are expected to reach speeds over 90 km/h, raising the bar on extreme performance.

It is no surprise that the oldest international sports competition in the modern world is also one of the most innovative from the point of view of technology: history shows that planning for the future demands deep roots and solid foundations. The partnership between Panerai and the America’s Cup is an example of this shared awareness, of this perfect balance between the past and the future.

A history rooted in tradition, the infinite passion for the sea, the ceaseless search for avant-garde technical solutions to reach ever more ambitious objectives, but always keeping man and his requirements at the centre of everything. All these values find expression in the watches created by Panerai for the 35th America’s Cup, for American fans of ORACLE TEAM USA and for SOFTBANK TEAM JAPAN, the first challenger from Asia in 15 years. These are five Special Edition watches produced in limited numbers, notable for their Swiss mechanics, Italian design and avant-garde technology, true to the unmistakable Panerai identity but enhanced by fascinating elements created for the occasion of the legendary America’s Cup.

LUMINOR MARINA 1950 AMERICA’S CUP 3 DAYS AUTOMATIC ACCIAIO – 44mm

A SPECIAL EDITION OF 300 UNITS PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE LEGEND OF THE AMERICA’S CUP: A CLASSIC PANERAI IS REVISITED, PERSONALISED WITH THE COLOURS OF THE LOGO OF THIS 35TH AMERICA’S CUP CAMPAIGN FOR THE OLDEST INTERNATIONAL SPORT COMPETITION IN THE MODERN WORLD.

The conjunction one of the most classic Panerai models and an aesthetic which pays tribute to the America’s Cup has resulted in the Official Watch of the 35th edition of the oldest sports competition in the modern world: the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic, a Special Edition of 300 units. It is a creation of great simplicity, minimalist in design and fundamental in function, with characteristics which make it a perfect watch for use at sea.

The case of the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic, inspired by that historically created by Panerai for the commandos of the Italian Navy, is made from AISI 316L stainless steel, as is the lever device protecting the crown, on which it exercises a light pressure, protecting it from accidental shocks and helping to guarantee water-resistance to the very high limit of 30 bars (about 300 metres). The polished bezel surrounds a classic Panerai black dial with its sandwich structure, on which the large luminous linear markers and figures, the date at 3 o’clock and the small seconds counter at 9 o’clock are all perfectly legible, even under conditions of little or no light. At 6 o’clock the phrase AMERICA’S CUP is printed in blue, and with the red of the seconds hand and the white of the other indications on the dial, it immediately recalls the colours of the logo of the celebrated competition. The official logo of the America’s Cup appears in relief on the solid steel screw back. Inside the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic is the P.9010 automatic movement with a power reserve of three days, made entirely in the Panerai Manufacture at Neuchâtel. The energy needed to accumulate the power reserve of three days – the base standard for Panerai in-house movements – is stored in two barrels whose springs are wound by a bidirectional oscillating weight. The balance, fixed by a bridge with twin supports, oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and it is associated with a stopping device which is activated the moment that the winding crown is pulled out, in order to synchronise the time with a reference signal. The time can be conveniently adjusted without interfering with the running of the watch, thanks to the device which moves only the relative hand, in jumps of one hour forwards or backwards.

The black strap of the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic (PAM00727), made of natural untreated leather, is personalised to express the spirit of the America’s Cup: it has the logo of the competition heatembossed on both sides and it is finished with double sewing in contrasting blue and red threads.

OFFICINE PANERAI OFFICIAL PARTNER OF ORACLE TEAM USA

Avant-garde technology using materials of exceptional performance, with advanced functionality yet intuitive and simple to operate, and with a legendary past: the three new Special Editions created by Panerai for ORACLE TEAM USA have much in common with the team which is the Defender in the 35th America’s Cup. With sailing legend James Spithill as Skipper and with another legendary personality, Russell Coutts, as CEO, ORACLE TEAM USA won the 2010 and 2013 editions of the America’s Cup. As the Defender, it will take part in the 2017 final America’s Cup Match which is to be hosted in the island of Bermuda. It is a team of professionals – of sailing, of design, of engineering and of much else – who represent the best of the world’s talents in their fields. To celebrate this excellence, Panerai has created three watches with remarkable characteristics and performance, perfect to be worn by enthusiasts of the America’s Cup.

LUMINOR 1950 ORACLE TEAM USA 3 DAYS CHRONO FLYBACK AUTOMATIC CERAMICA – 44mm

OFFICIAL WATCH OF ORACLE TEAM USA

ONE OF THE THREE OFFICIAL WATCHES CREATED BY PANERAI FOR ORACLE TEAM USA, DEFENDER OF THE 2017 AMERICA’S CUP. IT EMPLOYS AVANT-GARDE MECHANICS AND MATERIALS, SATISFYING THE REQUIREMENTS OF EVERY ENTHUSIAST WHO WANTS TO CELEBRATE A TEAM WHICH IS WRITING THE LATEST PAGE IN THE HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY SAILING.

The Panerai Laboratory of Ideas is a modern establishment which integrates Swiss technical watchmaking expertise with Italian design, and beyond the world of high quality watchmaking, it also finds the most innovative solutions available to make watches of ever higher quality to appeal to its enthusiasts. The technical characteristics of the Luminor 1950 ORACLE TEAM USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic, one of the three Official Watches created by Panerai for ORACLE TEAM USA on the occasion of the 2017 America’s Cup, are examples of this excellence, paying tribute to the legend of a team of professionals who have contributed so much to the history of sailing.

Made from a special synthetic ceramic obtained from zirconium oxide, the case of the Luminor 1950 (44mm in diameter) is light and strong, with a uniform matt black appearance and the look of a sports watch. Also made of this ceramic is the bridge lever device which protects the winding crown from accidental shocks while exercising a light pressure on it, thus helping to increase the degree of the watch’s water-resistance to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres). The titanium back is screwed in place and it carries the logo ORACLE TEAM USA, the inscription 35TH AMERICA’S CUP and a drawing of the legendary trimaran of the defending team in relief. With the P.9100 Manufacture calibre, the Luminor 1950 ORACLE TEAM USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic is a chronograph with the flyback function, which enables the moving chronograph hands to be zeroed and instantly restarted by a single pressure, without needing first to stop it moving and returning it to zero.

In the new Panerai Special Edition created for ORACLE TEAM USA, the push-piece which controls the stopping and starting of the chronograph is at 10 o’clock, while the push-piece at 8 o’clock activates the flyback function and zeroes the chronograph after it has stopped. To make them easy and clear to read against the black dial, the chronograph minutes and seconds hands are positioned centrally and distinguished by the colours of the America’s Cup: the seconds hand is blue while the minutes hand is red, moving forward in jumps. The two small counters use the same colours to make their indications clear: the continuous seconds hand at 9 o’clock is blue, while the chronograph hour hand at 3 o’clock is red. On the flange is a useful red tachymeter scale in knots, which enables the speed of a vessel over a given distance to be determined. The P.9100 calibre has many details which testify to its sophisticated construction: a vertical clutch, column wheel, two spring barrels connected in series which provide a power reserve of three days, a rotor which winds the springs of the barrels in both directions, and the variable inertia balance which oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. To ensure the maximum precision when setting the watch, the mechanism also has the device for stopping the balance, the seconds reset mechanism and the means enabling the hour hand to be moved backwards or forwards in one-hour jumps, without interfering with the movement of the minute hand or the running of the watch. The new Luminor 1950 ORACLE TEAM USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic (PAM00725) is a Special Edition of only 200 units. It is supplied with a black strap of natural untreated leather, personalised to express the spirit of the America’s Cup: as well as having the logo of the competition heat-embossed on both sides, it is finished with double sewing in contrasting blue and red threads.

LUMINOR 1950 REGATTA ORACLE TEAM USA 3 DAYS CHRONO FLYBACK AUTOMATIC TITANIO – 47mm

THE EXCELLENCE AND UNIQUENESS OF PANERAI MECHANICS ARE EMBODIED IN THE NEW SPECIAL EDITION CREATED FOR ORACLE TEAM USA, DEFENDER OF THE 35TH AMERICA’S CUP, WITH THE REVERSE COUNTER FUNCTION FOR ACCURATELY DISPLAYING THE STARTING TIMES OF A RACE. OFFICIAL WATCH OF ORACLE TEAM USA

Panerai pays its respects to ORACLE TEAM USA, Defender of the 2017 America’s Cup, with a new version of the watch designed to celebrate its own historic links with sailing and the sea: the Luminor 1950 Regatta ORACLE TEAM USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio, an automatic chronograph with a power reserve of three days, fitted with the Regatta countdown mechanism. This is a new model of an instrument with sophisticated technical solutions, designed to be worn by sailing enthusiasts, and its design is inspired by the colours of ORACLE TEAM USA: black, red, white and blue. The Regatta countdown function is remarkably simple to use, reflecting the excellence of the technical innovation within the P.9100/R automatic chronograph calibre used in the Luminor 1950 Regatta ORACLE TEAM USA 3Days Chrono Flyback Automatic. A red push-piece at 4 o’clock causes the central red chronograph minute hand to move back in one-minute jumps, until it is set to the correct countdown position. When the chronograph is started, by operating the start/stop push-piece at 10 o’clock, the relative hands start to move, initially indicating the minutes and seconds remaining before the start and, once the countdown is finished, the time elapsed from the start of the race. The push-piece at 9 o’clock returns all the chronograph hands to zero or, if it is pressed when the hands are already moving, it operates the return-to-zero (flyback) function, thus enabling a new time interval to be started immediately without carrying out the stop and reset operations The black dial of the Luminor 1950 Regatta ORACLE TEAM USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic has the sandwich structure and the classic Panerai design with its large linear markers and figures, enhanced by the elements which enable the indications of the chronograph functions to be read.

The chronograph hands are central and distinguished by different easily recognisable colours, while the red hand indicating the hours rotates in the small dial at 3 o’clock, symmetrical with the small seconds dial with a blue hand. On the flange are the 15-minute scale of the count-down counter, with the last ten minutes marked in blue and red, and also the tachymeter scale in knots which enables the speed of the yacht to be measured over a predetermined distance The Luminor 1950 case has the characteristic Panerai lever device for protecting the winding crown, and it is 47 mm in diameter. It is made of brushed titanium, a material which is light and strong with the bezel polished in contrast.

The solid back is engraved in relief with the logo ORACLE TEAM USA, the inscription 35TH AMERICA’S CUP and a drawing of the defending team’s legendary trimaran. The P.9100/R automatic movement have several technical characteristics which are evidence of the level of technical excellence of the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel: it is a sophisticated chronograph movement with a vertical clutch and column wheel, a variable inertia balance which oscillates at 28,800 vibrations an hour, and the seconds reset mechanism for accurate synchronisation. The rotor winding the springs of the two spring barrels oscillates in both directions, providing a power reserve of three days, the minimum standard for Panerai in-house calibresWater-resistant to 10 atmospheres (100 metres), as is appropriate for an advanced instrument for professional sailors, there are only 200 units of the Luminor 1950 Regatta ORACLE TEAM USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic (PAM00726). It is supplied with a black strap of untreated leather, personalised with the America’s Cup logo heat-embossed on both sides, with contrasting sewing in red and blue thread.

It is 15 3/4 lignes in diameter with a thickness of 4.5 mm and a very solid construction; a large brushed plate, with diamondpolished chamfering, conceals almost all the wheelwork while revealing the balance which oscillates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour.
